From the author’s birth in Ross-on-Wye in 1936, to the family’s departure from the town in 1950, this is a book vivid with memories of growing up in Ross before, during and after the Second World War.

From sharing her home with evacuees and refugees, befriending German prisoners-of-war from the Ross camp, the work of the S.W.S. Electric Power Company (run by her father), memories of local schools and shops, pastimes and outings, this little book is a wonderful testament to a treasured childhood.

As Barbara says, ‘Ross was a town which embraced newcomers with open arms’, and her recollections affirm the warmth and generosity of the inhabitants of the town during extraordinary times.
